Art Deco House Refurbishment in Hampstead Garden Suburb

Our clients bought this 1930s two-storey house in Hampstead Garden Suburb, in total need of modernisation. It was a great opportunity to redesign the layout; improving the flow between the social areas while creating better ratios of bedrooms and bathrooms.

Many clients today ask for an open-plan kitchen, but plenty of families still value a separate kitchen that contains cooking smells and hides the mess when guests are over. On the ground floor, the dining room and reception were reconfigured to be approached through double doors from the lobby, joined to each other through a full-height opening. The clients wanted a television in the reception without it dominating the room, so we created a feature wall clad in black marble, holding the TV in a recess above a bioethanol fireplace; the marble completely disguising the screen when not in use.

The kitchen was redesigned with a contemporary look, new units and appliances, and a layout incorporating a breakfast counter that doubles as a buffet when serving guests. A new Crittall French door to the garden matches the existing rear elevation, giving a direct link outside. The garage was converted to provide bike storage accessed from the driveway, a cloakroom, a guest WC and a laundry room.

Upstairs, a previous layout of four bedrooms sharing a single bathroom was reconfigured into a master bedroom with en-suite and generous wardrobe, a further double bedroom, and a study served by a family shower room. Throughout, the house was fully re-serviced with new wiring, plumbing, heating and a pressurised hot-water system and with a new lighting scheme, bespoke joinery, and new hard and soft landscaping to complete the project.
