Highgate

Sociable and playful home with open-plan kitchen/dining room

Many wonder what an architect would do in his own home. Jack Schneider, director of Schneider Designers, planned to move into a new house after his children left home. He wanted a project and bought a house designed by Ted Levy Benjamin, a South African architect. Benjamin did many projects in north London in the 1970s. The house was brought back to its former glory and adapted to modern living by Jack.

With a penchant for quirky 1970s aesthetics and mid-century modern styles, this house was destined to be theirs. They became the second couple to own it. The intention was to make their mark and adapt the space. However, great care was taken to retain the original design’s spirit. New bespoke joinery was designed and manufactured to match the 1970s features. Timber finishes and wooden staircases and railings were preserved.
